What is the Travel Rule and why is it required for crypto transfers?

August 24, 2026

The Travel Rule is a legal regulation that requires sender and recipient information to be recorded in crypto asset transfers. It is applied under the regulations in force in Türkiye and comes into effect in all crypto asset withdrawals and deposits on Paribu.

What is the Travel Rule?

The Travel Rule is a regulation that, under the legal regulations in force, requires crypto asset service providers to record sender and recipient information in every transfer. The information form you encounter when withdrawing or depositing crypto on Paribu is filled in under this regulation.

Why is the Travel Rule applied?

The main goal of the Travel Rule is to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing, and illegal transactions in crypto asset transfers. The regulation makes it traceable who a transfer is sent from, who it reaches, and which platforms it takes place between. This both enhances the security of user assets and ensures compliance with legal regulations.

In which transactions does the Travel Rule come into effect?

The Travel Rule comes into effect in all crypto asset withdrawals and deposits made on Paribu. The form requests different information depending on the transaction type: recipient information for external withdrawals, sender information for external deposits, and only a short description for internal transfers. The transfer is not approved until the form is completed.

Crypto withdrawal (external): For withdrawals to a platform outside Paribu or to an independent wallet, recipient information and destination platform information are requested.
Crypto deposit (external): For crypto assets coming to your Paribu account from outside, sender information and source platform information are requested.
Internal transfer (within Paribu): For transfers between Paribu users, since recipient information is already in the system, only a short description is requested.

Note: The Travel Rule form appears before the transaction is confirmed. The transfer is not approved until the form is completed.

How do I fill in the Travel Rule form when withdrawing crypto?

In the crypto withdrawal flow, after you complete the amount and address steps, the Travel Rule form opens. In the form, you select the recipient type, enter the recipient information, set the destination platform, and add a short description explaining the purpose of the transfer in order. When all steps are complete, the transaction is sent for approval.

1. Recipient type selection

You specify who the recipient is among three options:

Myself — The withdrawal is to your own account on another platform.
Another person — The withdrawal is to another individual.
Institution — The withdrawal is to an institution or legal entity.

2. Recipient information

The information requested varies by recipient type:

Myself: First and last name come from your profile automatically; you only select the platform.
Another person: Recipient first name, Recipient last name, and address information are required. The address must include the country, province, and district.
Institution: Legal name of the recipient institution (at least 3 characters) and address information are required. The content you enter in the institution name field is checked; if inappropriate content is detected, you are asked to use a different expression.

3. Platform selection

After the recipient information, you select the destination platform. You can search for the platform you will send the asset to on the Platform name screen. If the platform you are looking for is not on the list, you can use the Other option to enter the platform name yourself. The platform name you enter is checked; if inappropriate content is detected, you are asked to use a different expression.

If you prefer not to enter the recipient information again for every transfer, you can select the Remember recipient information for future transfers option; the form is then pre-filled for your subsequent transfers to the same recipient.

4. Description

In the last step, you add a description related to the transfer. Ready options are available for quick selection:

To stake on the recipient platform
To buy / sell on the recipient platform
To trade a crypto asset not listed on Paribu
Other (you write your own description)

If you select Other and write your own description, this text must contain at least 20 characters; a description made up only of spaces is not accepted. The field also has a length limit — once you reach it, you cannot keep typing. When the form is submitted, the content is checked automatically; if inappropriate content such as profanity, slang, or emoji is detected, you are asked to edit the description.

How do I fill in the Travel Rule form when depositing crypto?

When a crypto asset comes to your account from outside, the asset is first set to the pending status. To have it credited to your balance, you need to fill in the Travel Rule form. The form structure is similar to the one for withdrawal:

Sender type: My own account / Another person / Institution
Sender information: Sender first name and Sender last name, or institution name + address depending on type
Platform the transfer came from: The platform the asset was sent from. You first state whether it is a Domestic platform or an International platform, then select the platform from the list or enter it yourself with Other
Enter your description: You can choose one of the ready options or write your own text. The ready options include To buy / sell on Paribu, To convert the crypto asset to TRY, To take part in events such as auctions, and Other
Transfer information: The amount, asset, address, and time of the transfer appear in the form automatically; you do not need to enter this information

After the form is completed, the asset is credited to your account.

Travel Rule for internal transfers

For internal transfers between Paribu users, recipient information is already on file in the system. In these transactions, the Travel Rule form contains only a short description field; no recipient type or platform selection is made. The description must be at least 20 characters in internal transfers as well and must be free of inappropriate content.

What happens if I exit the Travel Rule form?

When you want to exit the screen during form filling, a confirmation screen opens. If you exit before completing the form on a withdrawal, the transfer is canceled; on a deposit, the asset stays on hold and is not credited to your account until you complete the form. For deposits you can reopen the form later.

On withdrawal: If you exit without entering the recipient information, the transfer is canceled; you need to restart the transaction.
On deposit: If you exit without adding the sender information, the asset stays on hold. Later you can complete the form by going to the related asset detail on the Wallet tab or to the pending transfer row in the transaction history.

Warning: For unapproved deposit transfers, the asset stays in the pending status until you complete the form.

Things to consider for description and free-text fields

The description, manual platform name, and manual institution name fields in the Travel Rule form are subject to the same content rules. The text you enter in these fields is checked, and you are asked to edit it when inappropriate content is detected.

The description must contain at least 20 characters; the institution name must be at least 3 characters.
Inappropriate content such as profanity, slang, emoji, brand names, and gambling sites is detected; in this case you are asked to rewrite the text.
When you select one of the ready description options, the character limit is met automatically.
It is recommended that the description reflects the actual purpose of the transfer; contradictory or misleading descriptions may extend the review process.
