What is memo / tag?

A memo or tag is an additional identifier that needs to be entered alongside the address in some crypto networks so that the transfer reaches the correct account. If you send a transfer on a network requiring a memo without one or with an incorrect memo, your asset may be lost.

What is memo / tag?

A memo (or destination tag) is a numerical or alphanumeric identifier in some crypto networks that determines which account a transfer is routed to in setups where multiple users share the same wallet address. The address represents the "building" while the memo represents the "apartment number"; together they ensure that the transfer reaches the correct user.

Which crypto assets require memo or tag?

Memo or tag requirements vary by blockchain network. Among the assets supported on Paribu, the following require a memo or tag during transfer:

• XRP (Ripple) — Memo
• XLM (Stellar) — Memo
• ATOM (Cosmos) — Memo
• GRAM (Gram, previously Toncoin) — Memo
• A (Vaulta) — Memo
• SEI — Memo
• DYDX — Memo
• INJ (Injective) — Memo
• STX (Stacks) — Memo
• TIA (Celestia) — Memo
• AKT (Akash) — Memo

On the XRP network this field is called destination tag; on the others it is referred to as memo. On Paribu all these identifiers are shown under the Memo label. No memo or tag is entered on networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), Solana, Arbitrum One, and Avalanche C-Chain.

When you select a network in a deposit or withdrawal transaction, the memo or tag field is shown automatically if the selected network requires it. If it is not required, this field is not displayed.

Note: You can tell whether an asset requires a memo or tag from whether the Memo field appears on the deposit address screen. If the field is not shown, no memo is required for that asset.

How is the memo used when depositing crypto?

When you deposit a crypto asset over a network requiring a memo to your Paribu account, you are given two pieces of information on the deposit screen: the wallet address and the memo. You need to enter both completely on the external platform you are sending the transfer from.

Deposit steps:

1. Select the asset on the deposit screen
2. Select the network requiring a memo (e.g., XRP)
3. Copy the wallet address and the memo value separately
4. Paste the relevant values into both the address field and the memo field on the external platform you are sending from
5. Start the transfer

Warning: When depositing from a network requiring a memo, if you send without entering the memo your asset may be lost. The Paribu deposit address screen highlights this with a red warning: "Please fill in the memo field. Otherwise your assets may be lost."

How is the memo entered when withdrawing crypto?

When withdrawing from Paribu over a network requiring a memo, you enter the memo value provided by the recipient into the Memo field on the withdrawal form. The memo field is only shown if the selected network requires a memo; on networks where it is not required, this field is not opened.

Withdrawal steps:

1. Select the asset on the withdrawal screen
2. Enter or paste the recipient address
3. The Memo field appears when you select a network requiring a memo
4. Enter the memo value provided by the recipient in this field
5. Set the amount and confirm the transaction

If the recipient has provided you with a memo, make sure to fill in this field; assets sent without a memo may be lost. The helper text on the withdrawal screen serves as a reminder of this.

What happens if I forget to enter the memo?

If you make a transfer on a network requiring a memo without entering the memo or with an incorrect memo, your asset will not reach the destination account. This applies to both deposits and withdrawals:

• Deposit: If you send from an external platform to Paribu without entering a memo, the asset is not automatically credited to your account.
• Withdrawal: If you send from Paribu to an external platform without entering a memo or with an incorrect memo, the asset cannot be routed to the recipient account.

In such cases, recovering the asset requires technical intervention between the platforms; the process can take time and may not always result favourably.

Where does the memo value come from?

The memo value is an identifier provided to you by the receiving party:

• If you are sending to an exchange: The exchange shows you both the wallet address and the memo value specific to that account on its deposit page. You need to use both in the same way.
• If you are sending to an independent wallet: The memo requirement varies by wallet and network. If the wallet provides you with a memo, use it; if not, you leave it empty (the wallet may not support memos).

The memo value is always generated by the recipient; you do not create it.

Are memo and destination tag the same thing?

In practice they serve the same purpose. On the Ripple network this field is called destination tag; on other networks it may be referred to as memo or note. On Paribu all these identifiers are shown under the Memo label.

What happens if I write the memo incorrectly?

An asset sent with an incorrect memo may be routed to another user's account or rejected by the network. Copying and pasting the memo on the deposit screen directly is recommended.

What happens if I leave the memo empty on a network requiring it?

If the recipient has provided a memo and you leave this field empty, your asset will not reach the destination account. The same applies in the other direction: if you send from an external platform to Paribu without entering a memo, the asset is not credited to your account.

Can I send to the same address with different memos?

Yes. On networks requiring a memo, the same wallet address is shared by multiple accounts; each account is distinguished by its own memo. Transfers sent to the same address with different memos reach different accounts.

What happens if I accidentally enter a memo on a network that does not require one?

For assets not requiring a memo, the memo field is not displayed on Paribu's withdrawal screen; therefore the situation of accidentally entering a memo does not apply. On external platforms, the memo field is left empty.
