What is MA (moving average)?
MA (Moving Average) is a technical indicator drawn by calculating the average of a crypto asset's prices over a given time interval. It smooths daily price volatility and helps you see the direction of the trend more clearly. It is one of the most fundamental and widely used indicators in technical analysis.
How is the moving average calculated?
The moving average is the arithmetic mean of the closing prices in the selected period.
Formula: MA = (P₁ + P₂ + ... + Pₙ) / n
Where:
- P₁...Pₙ: The closing price of each day (or candle) in the selected period
- n: The length of the period
For example, the 14-day MA is the average of the closing prices of the last 14 days, and a new average is calculated each new day by removing the oldest data point.
Common MA periods
In technical analysis, different periods represent different time perspectives:

Investors can track multiple MAs on the same chart depending on the strategy they use.
How to read MA
The moving average shows how far price deviates from the average level and which direction the trend is heading:
- Price above MA: Buying pressure may be stronger in the mid-to-long term; an uptrend tendency
- Price below MA: Selling pressure is stronger; a downtrend tendency
- Slope of MA: If the MA line tilts upward, the trend is up; if it tilts downward, it is down
- Support/resistance role: Commonly used MA levels (50, 100, 200) may be perceived by the market as support or resistance
MA crossovers
In technical analysis, multiple MAs crossing each other produce significant signals:
- Short-term MA crossing above the long-term MA: Upside momentum signal
- Short-term MA crossing below the long-term MA: Downside momentum signal
These signals may not be sufficient on their own as an investment decision; it is recommended to evaluate them together with volume and other indicators.
MA variants
On Paribu, the equally weighted moving average (MA) is offered by default. In technical analysis, there are also variants that use different weighting methods:
- EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Gives more weight to recent data; reacts faster to price moves
- WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Weight is distributed linearly

Limitations of MA
The moving average is a strong trend indicator; however, it has some limits:
- Lagging indicator: Because it is calculated from past data, it does not always reflect price reversals on time
- Misleading signals in sideways markets: While price moves within a side band, MA crossovers can produce frequent signals
- Insufficient on its own: When making decisions, it should be interpreted alongside volume, momentum indicators and price structure
Note: A short-period MA (e.g., 20) gives more meaningful signals in short-term trading, while a long-period MA (e.g., 200) is more useful for long-term assessments. Using two MAs of different periods on the same chart lets you see both the general trend and momentum changes together.
